Balance Exercises for Older Adults
Below are 5 simple, safe and effective balance exercises for older adults.
1. Heel-to-Toe Walk (Tightrope Walk)
How to do it:
Walk in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the
other.
Take 10–20 steps while looking straight ahead.
Why it helps: Improves coordination and balance by engaging core muscles.
Make sure you have a table or wall next to you for support in case you wobble.
2. Single-Leg Stand
How to do it:
Stand behind a chair and hold the back for support.
Lift one foot off the ground and balance on the other for up to 30 seconds.
Switch sides.
Why it helps: Strengthens ankle and leg muscles used in everyday balance.
3. Sit-to-Stand from a Chair
How to do it:
Sit in a sturdy chair with arms crossed over your chest.
Stand up slowly, then sit back down, without using your hands.
Repeat 10 times.
Why it helps: Builds leg strength and balance confidence.
4. Side Leg Raises
How to do it:
Hold onto the back of a chair for support.
Slowly lift one leg out to the side, keeping it straight.
Hold for 2 – 3 seconds, then lower. Repeat 10 times per leg.
Why it helps: Improves hip stability and side-to-side balance.
5. Marching in Place
How to do it:
While standing, march in place by lifting knees high one at a time.
Do for 1–2 minutes.
Why it helps: Improves overall stability and coordination.
Make sure you have a table or chair nearby in case you wobble.
