Animal osteopathy for horses, dogs and farm animals!
We treat all animals!
Working as an animal osteopath has given me practical, hands-on experience treating a wide
range of animals. Over the years, to name just a few, I have had the opportunity to help
horses, dogs, donkeys, cows, sheep and goats. Although animals are unable to describe their
discomfort in words, their bodies speak clearly through posture, gait, muscle tone, and
behaviour.
Horses
With horses, most of my work involves issues with competitions, post-injury rehabilitation,
and general musculoskeletal maintenance. I frequently assess restrictions throughout their
bodies which may be affecting their stride length, balance, or willingness to work. Often,
these areas of restriction can create compensatory patterns throughout the body. After
treatment, owners commonly report improved movement, better transitions, and a more
consistent way of going under saddle.
Dogs
Dogs present with a different set of challenges. Many of the patients I see involves arthritis,
post-surgical recovery (such as cruciate ligament repairs), injury, or mobility problems in
older dogs. Gentle osteopathic techniques adapted for smaller animals can help improve joint
mobility, reduce muscular tension, and support circulation. In many cases after treatment,
dogs tend to show improvements in comfort, willingness to exercise, and overall activity
levels.
Donkeys
Donkeys and goats require a slightly different approach. They are often stoic and may not
show obvious signs of discomfort. Careful observation of posture, weight distribution, the
case history from their owner and careful palpation is essential. I normally treat joint
restrictions, tight muscles and limb compensation patterns, particularly seen in retired and
companion donkeys.
Cows
Cows and sheep though less commonly associated with osteopathy, can greatly benefit from
treatment. Osteopathy supports limb problems in lambs, mobility issues from arthritis in older
pet sheep to injured cows from playing in the field or bulls suffering from musculoskeletal
problems. Addressing their physical imbalances can improve their comfort and help return
them to normal function more efficiently.
Animal Osteopathy
Across all species, assessment is key! Osteopaths evaluate movement, palpate for tissue
changes, and tailor treatment to each individual animal. While each species presents unique
anatomical and behavioural considerations, the core osteopathic principles remain the same.
Animal osteopathy is a practical, evidence-informed manual therapy aimed at improving
mobility, comfort, and functional performance. My experience across all animals continues to
reinforce how valuable a structured, whole-body approach can be in supporting animal health
and wellbeing, helping to give every animal the opportunity for a more comfortable life.
