Spring activities to kick-start the season

Spring is finally arrived! The weather is slowly improving, the days are getting longer, the daffodils and crocuses are starting to bloom.

It is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy some of the free benefits available to all of us.

Spring activities to kick-start the season:

Forest-bathing – if you have a local woodland area you could have a go at forest-bathing. It is about being mindful in nature, appreciating the environment and enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of trees and woods.

The practice can range from a simple walk in the woods to guided forest meditation sessions, learning to really appreciate the moment and enhance wellbeing, reducing stress and increasing creativity.

You can search for a forest-bathing guide here.

If you are going for a walk, why not take a different route, or see if you can spot the first budding leaves. Listen for woodland sounds and ground yourself in the place and the moment.

Free gyms – there are several places that have free equipment for outside exercise. Local parks can have free exercise machines, so you can work out and enjoy the benefits of being in nature at the same time. Or why not check to see if there are free tennis courts or skate parks locally?

The National Cycle Network has marked routes for those of you who prefer exercising on two-wheels.

Dawn Chorus – get your daily dose of sunshine first thing and enjoy the glorious noise of the dawn chorus. Birdsong has been shown to reduce stress and increase positivity. So throw open the windows or step outside and revel in this free morning concert!

There are so many ways to enjoy Spring, and so many benefits for the mind and body in doing so. Spring bulbs are starting to flower, so why not see if there are any local gardens with displays just popping in colour!

Remember to exercise safely, and only do what you can. After a winter break don’t overdo anything, but enjoy what you can do. If you feel unwell from exercise stop what you are doing, and remember to stay well hydrated and suitably dressed.

Enjoy Spring, let the season lift your mood, and enjoy being active if you can.
